Why Species Instead of Races? - Don Jones - 02-09-2016 11:13 AM
What were formerly called Races in Netherstorm are now called Species in Netherstorm Advanced. This is more than just cosmetic.
First, it is actually more accurate. What most fantasy rpgs refer to as races are actually closer to species.
Secondly, it makes it easier for us to have subgroups, if we choose to go that route later. For example, it is easier and makes more sense to have a Fae species with the races of Forest Fae, Mountain Fae and Plains Fae, than it does to have a race with three arbitrary groups.
Finally, it deals with the issue of half-breeds. There aren't any. We set maximum character customization as a design goal from the start, but a Half Fae-Kentrona? Really? Of course, a GM can override this and allow such things, but rules-as-written, these are different species and don't breed.

Sounds reasonable.
