Backstories can play an important part in helping players build characters that fit their concepts, as well as helping make that character unique.  Although backstories are technically optional, players who don't create a backstory are missing out on great opportunities to build their characters' abilities, as well as some amazing opportunities for role-playing.

In keeping with our design goal of maximum character customization, we didn't follow the common pattern of supplying completed backstories (i.e., Sailor, Street Urchin, etc.).  Instead, we provide players with the elements to build a backstory that defines and enhances the character.

For example, a player wants to create Galdor the Chartreuse, a scholar with some magic aptitude.  He wants Galdor to come from an educated family with private tutors.  To get the benefits that reflect this background, the player chooses detriments that will give him the points necessary.  Since Galdor comes from a privelaged family, the first detriment chosen is Greedy for 2 points, Arrogant for 2 points, Short Tempered for 2 points and Blunt for 1 point, totalling 7 points in Detriments.

With the points taken in Detriments, the player can purchase Benefits that reflect Galdor's scholarly and magic background, by giving him Bookworm for 2 points, Luinguist for 3 points and Magical Aptitude for 2 points.  Galdor now has the background of an aloof scholar from a background of privelage.
